Break Out! by ANTRust Lies Beneath

by ~ANT

Rust Lies Beneath started with a rust stain on the floor of the basement where I live. I used the basic rust stain, cutting the shape into quarter inch multi-ply panel, added red glass, and a light behind the cut-out.

Next, I added a layer of linen over the cut-out using watercolor to enhance the light bleeding through the linen. Another layer of linen was added with a quarter of an inch space between the two. The woman was painted on this outside layer of linen.

The inspiration for this piece was from a man I had met. He was beautiful on the outside, but once you saw deeper inside, the real man showed up. Lies, deceit, and disrespect were the name of his game.

Staying open to the possibilities with this piece was important. When I began the portrait the painting was supposed to be a man. When the portrait was complete the man had changed to a woman. I had one shot to get it right because the linen was already permanently glued to the piece. Even though the process was scary and nerve wracking it was well worth it. I think you will agree!
