A Facet of Essence

I created “A Facet of Essence” for an online contest. I didn’t come close to winning. No worries.

While painting this piece I was reading a book “The Art Spirit” by Robert Henri. Robert Henri is an amazing American portrait artist. In this book he explains explicitly his technique for producing portraits, which fit easily into what I needed with this painting. Call it cramming for finals or hauling butt to hit a deadline, I was taking Robert Henri’s ideas and slamming the project into a week and a half.

With no model, I had the internet to explore, trying to find what I was looking for. The result was a model built from five different people of multiple ethnicities. Using Photoshop I meshed all of the images together to create a model for the painting you see with one notable exception... the knees and below. They are mine!
